This training program will help you prepare for the Building Performance Institute's (BPI's) Building Analyst written and field tests, and will open your eyes to a new way of thinking about residential buildings. You will come to understand how the house works as a system, why some homes fail, and how to use the latest building science technology to help resolve residential heating, cooling, base load, and air leakage problems. By using a 'whole house' performance-based approach, you will address a comprehensive range of interrelated building issues, and will be able to provide your clients with a more comfortable, safe, durable, energy efficient home.

Training Topics:
  • Health and safety
  • Fundamentals of building science
  • Identifying building performance problems, including ice dams, mold and mildew, and indoor air quality issues
  • Energy consumption analysis
  • Analyzing buildings by using 'blower door' technology and other diagnostic equipment
  • Assessing building tightness, mechanical and distribution systems, and combustion safety for a 'whole house' performance-based approach
  • Building airflow standard
  • Heat loss calculations for existing and improved conditions
  • Practical application of 'blower door,' combustion safety testing and other diagnostics for assessing air leakage and efficiency in buildings
NYSERDA is a public agency with the mission of reducing energy use in New York State, and it offers incentive programs for every sector to reduce energy use. NYSERDA is eager to build the capacity of the NYC contracting industry to construct and renovate energy efficient homes and commercial spaces.

NYSERDA is actively recruiting NYC professionals to participate in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program for 1- to 4-family homes. As a certified Home Performance contractor, your services will be sought by NYC homeowners wishing to gain access to valuable financing incentives and the assurance of verifiable energy savings. In addition, NYSERDA EmPower Programs require BPI certification.

The Building Analyst class is the first step to learning the 'whole house' approach, and leads to certification by the BPI. The BPI is a national accreditation organization and resource for building science technology. It sets standards for assessing and improving the energy performance of homes. The Building Analyst training prepares participants to conduct home energy audits; four days in the classroom and two days in the field conducting an energy audit are included. To become a partner in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, two certifications are required: one as a building analyst, and the other in either building envelope OR heating/cooling.

Whether or not you decide to work with NYSERDA or other government programs, the information and certifications can be useful to you and your business. Rising energy prices are driving a market for energy efficient home improvements. In addition to increasing prices for electricity, heating fuel, and water, we expect to see new funding initiatives and regulations to encourage or require that NYC buildings be upgraded for energy efficiency.
